There are also one or more questions requiring a full-sentence response.

My son was a bit disappointed with the history lessons because he focused on the “detective” and the Sherlock Holmes hat on the cover of this book.

He automatically assumed we’d be on scavenger hunts, checking longitude and latitude for more clues, or traveling around like Carman Sandiego.

What if working through one or two lessons a week not only covered all essential science for a year but also taught thinking skills and reading comprehension, not to mention the writing involved?

Science Detective does exactly that with scientific articles followed by true/false questions; diagrams, graphs, and charts; multiple choice opportunities; and more.Science Detective Beginning covers physical, life, and earth science.Topics include position and motion of objects; light, heat, electricity, and magnetism; life cycles of organisms; changes in the earth and sky; and much more.Passages each have at least five paragraphs, so these are not simple reading comprehension exercises even though many of the skills rely on reading comprehension more than anything else. Each passage has letters identifying every paragraph and numbers identifying every sentence since students will identify paragraphs and/or sentences that support their answers for quite a few of the questions. There are a few true/false and multiple-choice questions, but there are one or more charts or graphs that students need to either complete or interpret to answer questions. The concept map page offers a “word bank” to fill in answers.Other lessons include a geographical map, timeline, Venn Diagram, and/or black and white images. It is a discussion we usually save to wrap-up our lessons.Thankfully, this curriculum does not harp on evolution.Unfortunately he did not like this book as much as I did.I think the age range for this book is appropriate. My son did not like the lesson on China and the description of the Mongols cutting horse veins and drinking blood.
